A Sea of White

The first thing that strikes you upon entering White Sands is the sheer expanse of the gypsum dunes. Unlike typical desert sands, these dunes are bright white, giving the park an otherworldly feel. The landscape looks like it belongs on another planet. I was amazed by how the dunes seemed to shift and change with every step, their surfaces smooth and untouched in some places, and full of texture in others.

While the beauty of the dunes is enough to take your breath away, the park offers more than just scenery. There are several trails for hiking, and one of the highlights of my trip was sledding down the steep dunes—yes, you can sled on sand! I recommend bringing a sled or purchasing one from the gift shop. It’s a fun way to experience the dunes from a different perspective.

The contrast of the white dunes against the blue sky is stunning, and the sunsets are incredible. I managed to get some great shots as the sun dipped below the horizon, turning the sky into shades of pink and purple while the sands glowed.

Planning Your Visit

If you’re planning to visit White Sands, I recommend going early or later in the day. The heat can be intense in the middle of the day, even though the gypsum doesn’t retain heat as much as other types of sand. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and maybe even a picnic to enjoy while soaking in the views.

Despite the arid conditions, delicate purple flowers find a way to bloom in the gypsum sand. These small but vibrant plants stand out against the stark white backdrop, adding a touch of color to the otherwise monochromatic landscape.

What to Bring for a Day Trip to White Sands in June

Before heading out, I recommend bringing a few essentials to ensure a comfortable and safe trip. Here’s a handy list:
